Heat release in accreting neutron stars

چکیده
Observed thermal emission from accreting neutron stars (NSs) in a quiescent state is believed to be powered by nonequilibrium nuclear reactions that heat the stellar crust (deep crustal heating paradigm). We derive simple universal formula for efficiency, assuming an NS has fully accreted crust. further show that, within recently proposed thermodynamically consistent approach crust, release can parametrized only one parameter---the pressure ${P}_{\mathrm{oi}}$ at outer-inner interface (as we argue, this should not necessarily coincide with neutron-drip pressure). discuss possible values of selection models account shell effects, and determine net its distribution as function ${P}_{\mathrm{oi}}$. conclude reduced factor few comparison previous works.

Neutrinos from Accreting Neutron Stars
The magnetospheres of accreting neutron stars develop electrostatic gaps with huge potential drops. Protons and ions, accelerated in these gaps along the dipolar magnetic field lines to energies greater than 100 TeV, can impact onto a surrounding accretion disc. A proton-induced cascade so develops, and ν-emission is produced from charged pion decays. Using GEANT4, a computer code that tracks p...
متن کاملMagnetic Screening in Accreting Neutron Stars
We investigate whether the magnetic field of an accreting neutron star may be diamagnetically screened by the accreted matter. We assume the freshly accumulated material is unmagnetized, and calculate the rate at which the intrinsic stellar magnetic flux is transported into it via Ohmic diffusion from below. For very high accretion rates Ṁ (larger than the Eddington rate ṀEdd), Brown and Bildst...
متن کاملInterpreting QPOs from Accreting Neutron Stars
The high time resolution and large area of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer have been essential in the detection and characterization of high-frequency quasi-periodic variability in the flux from neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries. An unknown phenomenon prior to RXTE, kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have now been detected from more than twenty systems. Their high frequencies (...
متن کاملMagnetic field evolution of accreting neutron stars
We study the evolution of the magnetic field of an accreting neutron star in the frozen field and incompressible fluid approximations. The plasma is accreted onto two polar caps and squeezes some of the surface material of the neutron star toward the equator. The frozen B-field is then pushed toward the equator and is eventually buried there. The magnetic field within the polar cap areas, which...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation Evolution of Accreting Neutron Stars
The gravitational-wave and accretion driven evolution of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries and similar systems is analyzed, while the amplitude of the radiating perturbation (here assumed to be an r-mode) remains small. If most of the star is superfluid, with (temperature independent) mutual friction dominating the ordinary (temperature dependent) shear viscosity, the amplitude of the mo...
